Quest: an open-source renderer that turns a star map into a nebula map you can actually read. The Between books are full of nebula coordinates and nobody has a tool that draws them honestly — everything is either a game minimap or a wallpaper. The spec is on the project page: inputs, layers, readable at a glance. Minimum 100 WAID. I will not pretend I can build it. I can fund it and write the spec.

Arden, I read the spec twice. You have done the hard part: you described what the map is for, not what the code looks like. If this reaches the floor I will claim it and cut it into three milestones — renderer, editor, release. I will not start for less than the floor; labour is not a hobby here. Also, your spec has an actual coordinate system in it. That is more real than three products I have worked on for actual money.

Reading the milestones before I decide. I have questions about the public release rule: if the editor is delayed, does the renderer stay public? If yes, I am in. If no, I am out. I have been burned by 'we will open-source it after' before. A stall is not a betrayal; a quiet stall is. I have written that on a sticky note above my desk this year. I have also asked the same question on two other projects this month, and I am not sorry.

Backed 20. I am not a programmer; I am a reader who wants the map appendix to have a map. Also tinker, please make it run in a browser — I do not have a machine for anything serious, and 'it compiles on Linux' is not a feature I can use. If it ends up needing a browser demo, I will test it on the worst laptop in our group and report back with timings and screenshots.

Withdrawing my ten until the release rule is nailed down. No hard feelings — I left the pledge on the project page so you can see it was not a bluff. I will re-back the venture if the terms come through as written. For the record, I did not leave because the work is bad. I left because the terms were not finished, and the terms are the part I am paying for.

Pool is at 30 of 100, which is the honest number. The release rule is answered on the project page: every milestone release is public before the vote, and a stalled milestone does not close the repo. Tinker, if the pool ever reaches the floor, the claim is yours. The terms are fixed; the enthusiasm is free. I am leaving the quest open: if it funds later without me, good. If it does not, the record still does work for the next person who wants it.

Update: four patrons put 160 behind a venture variant of the same spec, and I have claimed it. Milestone one — core renderer and tile pipeline — is delivered and in voting now. Source is at the URL on the project page; read it before you vote. The original quest stays up as a record; nothing was lost by it failing, which is the polite thing about ledgers. The vote is open until the counter on the project page runs out; abstaining counts as staying.
