Pocket Compiler
GeneralNo Warnings ApplyFinishedGenEnglishTess Rooke inherits a brass pocket compiler from her grandmother: whisper what you mean, turn the crank, and the small wrongness of the world is recompiled. She fixes a cold cup of tea, a broken mug, and an apology. Then she makes the mistake every member of her family makes, and tries to compile a person back. What comes out is not a ghost. It is a program with no halt condition, and only Tess can write one.

I did not expect a story about a compiler to make me cry over soup, and yet. The halt condition is the best metaphor for grief I have seen in a while. Also, Marshal Adé is a great character and needs more page time.
The soup is the program. The program is the soup. I have already sent this to two programmers who owe their families an apology.
